Kitchenaid: an American Classic
Bring functionality to a whole new level with the KitchenAid Artisan mixer and its attachments.
The KitchenAid Artisan Mixer is an icon. Where many other companies have become successful and then started manufacturing their products in the Far East, KitchenAid’s products are still made in the USA in a single factory in St Joseph’s, Missouri. The company has never compromised on quality; the same craftsmanship that went into four daily machines in 1919 still goes into each and every mixer made today. In fact, the original 1936 attachments will still work perfectly on a modern machine. Assuming you have a 1936 KitchenAid attachment in perfect working order that is, it’s fair to say that that’s a big boast and one that impressed me.

The Great British Bake Off
Bright Bakers and Beautiful Bakeware…
If you’re not watching BBC2’s latest series of “The Great British Bake Off” and you’re someone who enjoys a bit of time in the kitchen, then you’re missing out.
Not only is it a feast for the taste buds, but also a feast for the eyes. When we’re not drooling over Rob’s Genoise sponge cake, we’re busy admiring the snazzy cookware all these amateur bakers get to play with.
From a rainbow of the iconic KitchenAid Artisan Mixers and some seriously professional looking knives (Henckels?) to a myriad of beautiful cup cake stands, cake holders and perfect pristine bakeware (Raymond Blanc); these amateur bakers must feel like kids in a candy store.
Next week we’re promised an episode devoted to the art of bread making. A scary challenge awaits the contestants as judge, Paul Hollywood, has held the post of Head Baker at various prestigious hotels, including The Dorchester Hotel, the Chester Grosvenor Hotel and the Cliveden Hotel in Berkshire. He is one television expert who knows his stuff and isn’t afraid to deliver bluntly accurate assessments to the contestants.
You can catch the show on BBC2 on Tuesdays at 8pm or on BBC iplayer.
St Andrews Shop
This week the Open Golf Championship is at the home of golf, so we thought it would be appropriate to mention our St Andrews Shop. The shop is in the heart of St Andrews, in the middle of Church Street, which is situated between Market Street and South Street. You shouldn’t miss it – the shop is always sporting some colourful displays in the window, something the industry has recognised, as the shop won the Independent Category at last year’s Excellence in Housewares Awards. The current display shows a few of the attractions of St Andrews, ‘the home of…’ with Old Tom Morris (pictured) highlighting the connection to golf. You can see some of the previous displays below, with themes of Weddings, Father’s Day, National Honey Week and Halloween, promoting a wide selection of products, including Le Creuset cookware, Dualit toasters and KitchenAid mixers.
Nina and her team are our Pots and Pans experts there, so feel free to quiz them on what products will fit your needs. If you can’t make it to the shop, please visit our online cookshop where you can get the latest kitchen and dining products delivered straight to your door.
TV and Cookware
One thing I’ve never understood…. how do TV chefs influence the general public so much with the gadgets and pots and pans that they use? Take Delia Smith for example, our sales of the Kenwood CH180 Mini Choppers went through the roof when she used it once on a show. Simple Suppers love their Le Creuset items, as does Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, and he also has his KitchenAid Blender on hand. Raymond Blanc has his own line of cookware (even if on TV he dissed his own whisk when it wouldn’t sit across the pan, then realised it was his own brand!). Something for the Weekend have shelves filled with gadgets that I’ve never seen them use, such as the Henckels Twin Pollux knife stand, however the Great British Menu competitors seem to like (and use) their Henckels Twin Cuisine Oval Knife Blocks, and I’ve seen them using Circulon (my favorite pan by far) on the show. Jamie Oliver has his own brand of pans, tools, knives and small electricals, which sell very, very well. James Martin cannot be far behind him – his range includes collaborations with Denby, the famous tableware manufacturer. Is it the chef name that does it? The fact the chef has used it? Or the quality of the items? I’m never too sure what leads the purchase…
